Dr. Matthew Wolenski, a fellowship trained orthopaedist specializing in foot and ankle procedures, comes ‘full circle’ in joining Brielle. He is a native of Hunterdon County, New Jersey, and studied and trained in various places along the eastern seaboard before returning to the area. In addition to bringing a new specialty to Brielle and to the entire area, Dr. Wolenski brings his lifelong passion for medicine. He recently gave evidence of this passion by taking time to answer the questions below.

How did you develop your interest in medicine, and in your specialty?

I always knew that I wanted to be a doctor. (Yes, sciences came easy to me in school). In high school, I became interested in orthopaedics, sports and rehabilitation. I wanted to recreate the quality of life for those who are injured from an accident or a sports injury, or bad arthritis or issues related to aging. I wanted to get people back to their routine daily life. In high school, I played football (at Delbarton, in Morristown.) As an undergraduate at Georgetown University, I was a rower. We were ranked in the top six nationwide in my senior year. During this time, I was able to see the difference that orthopaedics and surgery made to get people back to their activity following injuries. If I can help get athletes back on the playing field like they were pre-injury, it gives me great satisfaction and makes my work interesting. In addition to seeing the ability I had as an Orthopedic Surgeon to help athletes return to playing sports, I am also able to help all people with Foot and Ankle related problems, whether it be arthritis related to injuries or the aches and pains we all experience as we age. In fact, the majority of Foot and Ankle issues I see in practice are non-sports related.

When and why did you join Brielle?

I’m from Whitehouse Station in Hunterdon County, so originally being born and raised New Jersey, and the fact my family is still here, is the reason to return. I lived in various different places which made me realize I like living here. I like the ocean, and have fond memories of the Jersey Shore. Brielle, and all three offices where I will practice, is a great group of doctors that fit the way I want to work—with a professionalism and standards with which I think people should practice.

What distinguishes your practice?

I’m bringing to Brielle, and to the area, the fact that I am a fellowship trained foot and ankle surgeon, as well as a specialist in post-traumatic reconstruction. This is a new and unique service that was not currently available to the Monmouth, Ocean and points south. In fact, there are very few specialtists in the United States who do total ankle replacement—which is performed for severe arthritis or injury. I am privileged to have trained with people that were part of the FDA trial to approve this procedure in the U.S. In fact, I have been lucky to train with some of the leaders in orthopaedics.

What are your goals?

My goal, and the reason that Brielle brought me on board, is to perform the complex foot and ankle procedures that were part of my fellowship training, and that were not previously available in the area. My vision is specifically for this area of treatment, and to get the word out that now we handle complicated foot and ankle issues.

What has been your most inspiring case to date?

A woman came into the practice where I trained following a fall from a great height. She had broken both her heel bones (calcaneus). I saw her in the waiting room with two splints on her feet, crying from the pain of the injury. To break one calcaneus can be a devastating, life-changing injury, let alone breaking two. We successfully operated on her. When she completed her post-surgical physical therapy, I saw her walk into the office in normal, fashionable footwear, smiling and waving. That was an amazing feeling. To realize you have the potential to correct something that can potentially ruin someone’s life, and to see this patient come in almost as if nothing happened—that’s the amazing part of medicine and orthopaedics.

What, if any, have been your challenges?

Right now, the challenge revolves around starting up my practice and building a good reputation through hard work and good, respectful patient care.
What do you do in your spare time, if you have any?
I like the outdoors. I ski, play golf, and mountain bike. I like cooking and traveling. I’ve seen most of Europe. People ask me where I get the time for all this. I’m a work hard, play hard person.

Always pleased with your office and staff.

I love Dr. Wolenski. I have been dealing with him for several years with a number of different ailments and he has always been professional and treated me very well. I would highly recommend him to anyone.

Dr. Wolenski demonstrates an attitude of sincere care and compassion (I do not take this for granted since it is not so common). He actually "listens" and is gentle with his cortisone application. Thanks Dr. W. !!!

Have such confidence in Dr Wolenski! I am a retired ICU RN and I have pretty good judgment when it comes to doctors! Dr Wolenski is confident and knowledgeable and puts me totally at ease. Competent along with a Great bedside manner and down to earth.....Highly recommend him! as well as the friendly nice staff!

Dr. Wolenski provided excellent care by explaining his diagnosis and treatment clearly and completely. His injection of cortisone into both knees went very well and provided relief. The gel treatment is anticipated with welcome optimism. Dr. Wolenski's style is friendly and informative.

Dr. Wolenski is an outstanding orthopedic doctor. My recovery time from a ruptured tendon was 5 weeks and I was playing golf. I'm 86 yrs. old and my recovery has been exceptional because of the care, advice and professional competency of Dr. M. Wolenski. An outstanding Doctor who will someday be regarded as the best in the business.

Dr. Wolenski is a gem--a rare find. He listened to my concerns, was not condescending, and was professional. The entire staff was professional, courteous and made every step--from scheduling an MRI to dealing with my insurance company--EASY! I wish all my doctor offices ran like this one.

On May 31st, being almost 50 years of age, I broke my very first bone!! In addition to being in pain, I was very, very scared. I am the sole provider in my family & my job requires me to be on my feet for 10-15 hours a day so every thought races through your mind in a split second. I was referred to Dr. Matthew Wolenski. I had an appointment with his ASAP & there was no doubt I needed surgery. I was scheduled 4 days later due to swelling. I was treated with kindness, compassion and expertise so I knew I was in great hands! Every single person in his office was wonderful and professional. The office was spotless and I waited maybe 10 minutes each visit. Dr. Wolenski's coordinator Catie had everything filled out for disability insurance before my employer did!! She returned emails and phone calls immediately and really helped me navigate through unfamiliar waters. It has been almost 3 months and I'm in PT gaining strength little by little. I'm truly very fortunate to have found Dr. Wolenski during such an unfortunate time. I am blessed to be where I am today due to Dr. Wolenski, Kristen, Catie and the whole team of Brielle Orthopedics. Thank you.
