Avulsion Fractions

This type of fracture occurs when a ligament or tendon connecting the bone to a muscle pulls off a sliver of the bone. These injuries occur when the muscle experiences a shock or spasm that pulls on the ligament or tendon. Avulsion fractures are typically seen in athletes and young people.

Symptoms

  • Pain at the site of injury
  • Swelling and tenderness in the tissue surrounding the injured bone

Treatment

  • Medication to relieve pain
  • Crutches or a walker to improve mobility
  • Rest and keep weight off the injured limb
