Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM)

This type of diabetes is characterized by carbohydrate intolerance. Often seen in pregnant women, this type of diabetes typically subsides after childbirth but can develop permanently into diabetes in some cases. Babies born to mothers with GDM are also more likely to develop obesity, impared glucose tolerance, or diabetes later in life.

Symptoms

  • Increased thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Weight loss in spite of increased appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Frequent infections including those of the bladder, vagina, and skin
  • Blurred vision

Treatment

  • Eating a controlled diet
  • Regular exercise
  • Monitor blood glucose levels
  • Monitor fetal growth and well being
  • Regular medical check ups
  • Insulin injections
